If you’re happy and you know it…
“I have found that most people are about as happy as they make up their minds to be.” –Abraham Lincoln (Happy 202nd birthday, Abe!)
Happy, happy, joy, joy.
Lily has learned to clap her hands.
And while we are aware that this skill is neither unique nor the sign of a gifted child ;-), we giggle each time she performs it on her own. Mostly because the clapping is accompanied by exceedingly great joy. And because it requires no catalyst. Just your random act of happiness.
Watching her has led us to wonder what “self-cue” tells us humans we are happy. Is it a biochemical function of the brain? Is it a spark of the spirit? Is it a choice? We’re guessing yes, yes and yes.
Lily will comprehend, soon enough, just how many mental, physical, spiritual and social realities are beyond her immediate control. We’re hoping, though, that she will learn just as quickly the lesson so many of us humans struggle our whole lives to remember: Happiness, for the most part, is a mindset that is not dictated by circumstance.
But having a dad who’ll show you the gulf and the gulls and all of the possibilities is a pretty sweet deal, too.
Let’s just say we’re happy and we know it.
