It’s the little things…

Yesterday was one of those days.

You know.

A no-time-for-lunch, no-time-for-a-shower, no-time-for-a-few-minutes-of-rest-because-the-Engergizer Lily-was-doing-just-fine-in-spite-of-our-2am-quality-time-thankyouverymuch kind of day.

When benevolent husbandly reminders that you’re out of toilet paper, dog food, and diapers– again— elicit under-the-breath comments that are both snappy and snarky.

When help– even appreciated and totally adorable help– isn’t so helpful (see photo).

Pre-baby, I would have run a hot bath and parked myself in the tub with a book for at least an hour. And then I would have had my way with a pint of ice cream, poured a glass of wine, and headed off to bed early.

Last night, however, there were clothes to fold, taxes to think about, and nary a spoonful of ice cream in the house.

There was no wine, either.

And honestly? It’s been over a year since I’ve read a book without pictures.

So tonight–if Lily decides that she wants to give this sleeping thing a try–I’ll head on over to my very favorite site http://www.creativenonfiction.org/brevity/, where the writing is beautiful, powerful, and, most importantly, brief. I’ll do my best to not round up all of the chocolate I can find, and maybe– if Dmitri’s lucky– I’ll even take a quick shower.

And I’ll do my best to remember that, sometimes, it’s easier to appreciate the big things when you take a few minutes to enjoy the little things.

Especially adorable and helpful little things :).

  1. Kate….loved it again. BUT…..the motherly in me wonders if you wash those black items with the whites??????? 🙂

    • Not to worry, Doris! I wash them separately :). This overflowing basket contains at least three different loads. My clothes-folding attempts have all been foiled by a certain little girl who loves to pull EVERYTHING out of the basket… so it’s all mixed up. Again. Sigh :).

  2. Little ones always like to pull up to basket and unload it…..one item at a time. Just giving you a hard time about sorting the laundry. I know without a doubt your mother trained you properly. 🙂
