Blessing or curse, I’ve realized I now love too many people from too many places to remain detached when a major disaster appears more probable than possible. So this morning, as Irene makes her presence known up and down the eastern seaboard, my mental map, spiritual energy and the Weather Channel coincide.
There’s a heart on NY/NJ for Jersey Girls Ginny and Liz, both of whom have claimed Colorado for years but have family on alert there. There’s another on Arlington, VA, where Rebecca reports they’re fine, but concerned about friends from the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Another for Cindy, who’s actually in North Carolina and unable to catch a flight out for a family gathering in Phoenix. One on Jacksonville, where Susan and Pietro are feeling the force. And still another on Port Stuart, Florida, where my cousin Sandy lives.
Mother Nature has a way of reminding us of who and what matters most. To all waiting from Maine to the Keys to see what Irene brings and all of the inlanders who love them, you’re in my heart.
“Whoever claims to have made a pact with Destiny
Reveals himself a liar and a fool;
What is any of us but a straw in a storm?
How could anyone make a pact with a hurricane?”
